An ex-Indian cricketer names Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Shikhar Dhawan as his three picks for the ODI World Cup in 2023

Shikhar Dhawan used to captain the India ODI team whenever Rohit Sharma was out of the lineup. The fact that he last competed in an international match in December 2022, however, indicates that the veteran has slid in the selection process as the selectors turn their attention to the younger generation.

Dhawan, who is renowned for stepping up his performance in ICC competitions, has traditionally been a consistent opening batsman in limited-overs cricket. Wasim Jaffer, a former Indian cricketer, included him in his squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup despite the fact that he is 37 and towards the end of his professional career and might yet show to be a useful addition to the side.<img decoding=”async” loading=”lazy” class=”alignnone wp-image-94523″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-from-air-hostess-to-hairstylist-pervin-dastur-of-maine-pyar-kiya-fame-openes-1669540735258-1669540745649-1669540745649-11zon.png” alt=”” width=”1495″ height=”841″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-from-air-hostess-to-hairstylist-pervin-dastur-of-maine-pyar-kiya-fame-openes-1669540735258-1669540745649-1669540745649-11zon.png 549w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-from-air-hostess-to-hairstylist-pervin-dastur-of-maine-pyar-kiya-fame-openes-1669540735258-1669540745649-1669540745649-11zon-390×220.png 390w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-from-air-hostess-to-hairstylist-pervin-dastur-of-maine-pyar-kiya-fame-openes-1669540735258-1669540745649-1669540745649-11zon-150×84.png 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1495px) 100vw, 1495px” />

“My three openers will be Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Shikhar Dhawan,” Jaffer remarked. Shikhar Dhawan won’t be selected, but I’ll still retain him as a backup opener. I am alright with it even if he doesn’t play right away.

Jaffer made an additional intriguing choice by choosing Shreyas Iyer over Suryakumar Yadav. Since the ODI World Cup would be played under their own conditions, he wants India to start with two pacers and three spinners.

“Virat Kohli is certainly No. 3 after that. Shreyas Iyer is ranked fourth, followed by KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya. My three spinners for the XI would be Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja, he remarked.

“Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj/Mohammad Shami will be in my starting XI. Bumrah and Siraj, two seamers, will be on my team. Hardik Pandya’s bowling is crucial to me since the World Cup will be held in India. For me, even if he just bowls seven to eight overs rather than the required 10, that would be plenty.

Jaffer’s fourth seam bowling option will be the all-arounder Shardul Thakur.

“I would attempt to play three spinners if he (Pandya) bowls, and I will surely play both Axar and Jadeja since they are all-rounders. Of course, Kuldeep will be my third spinner. Shardul Thakur will be my fourth seamer, the man said.

Sanju Samson will serve as my backup keeper since I’ve already chosen Shikhar as my third opener, according to Jaffer, who would then replace KL Rahul as the wicketkeeper-batter.
